Lisbon & Porto 2011
By STTS
In 2011 The Society’s journeyed to Lisbon and Porto to discover Portugal’s distinctive tramway heritage. In Lisbon, the group experienced the city’s iconic vintage trams navigating the steep, narrow streets of the historic quarters, with the famous Route 28 offering a particularly memorable journey through the heart of the capital. Porto delivered an equally memorable experience with its blend of historic and modern operations, including the scenic riverside routes and connections to the city’s metro system. Members appreciated the chance to study the preservation efforts that have kept these characterful systems running, observe the unique operational challenges posed by Portugal’s hilly terrain, and examine the traditional yellow liveried vehicles that have become synonymous with Lisbon’s streetscape. It is yet another thoroughly rewarding addition to the Society’s calendar of international tours.
