Heidelberg 2012

By STTS

Heidelberg was the next destination that The Scottish Tramway and Transport Society chose for their annual trip in 2012. As one of Germany’s most picturesque cities it was a good place to witness Heidelberg’s well-integrated light rail system operated by Rhein-Neckar-Verkehr. We were provided with a good example of how tramways serve both historic city centres and newer suburban developments, with routes extending across the Neckar valley and connecting to the regional rail network. Members enjoyed observing the mix of low-floor modern vehicles and operational practices that characterise contemporary German tramway operations, whilst also appreciating the system’s role in supporting sustainable urban transport in a city renowned for its environmental consciousness. The visit allowed participants to experience tram journeys through Heidelberg’s charming old town, overlooked by its famous castle, and to explore the wider Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area’s interconnected public transport offerings.
