Vienna & Bratislava 2014

By STTS

The Scottish Tramway and Transport Society’s 2014 tour to Vienna and Bratislava gave a unique opportunity to compare and contrast two distinctive Central European tramway systems within close proximity. Vienna’s magnificent network, one of the largest and oldest in the world, provided an exceptional showcase of urban rail excellence, with its iconic Ringstrasse routes, extensive suburban extensions, and impressive fleet ranging from heritage vehicles to state-of-the-art ultra-low-floor trams operated by Wiener Linien. The short journey to Bratislava allowed participants to experience Slovakia’s capital and its more compact but developing tramway system, offering insights into post-communist transport modernisation and the challenges of maintaining public transport networks in smaller European cities. Members appreciated the architectural and operational contrasts between Vienna’s grand imperial streetscapes and well-established infrastructure, and Bratislava’s emerging modern identity with its mix of older and newer rolling stock
