Antwerp 2018
By STTS
The Scottish Tramway and Transport Society’s 2018 visit to Antwerp provided the group a fascinating exploration of Belgium’s most ambitious and evolving tramway networks. Antwerp’s system, operated by De Lijn, provided an intriguing study of Flemish urban transport, featuring an extensive network that connects the historic city centre with surrounding districts and suburban areas through a combination of traditional street-running and modern premetro tunnel sections beneath the city core. The visit included journeys through Antwerp’s magnificent historic centre, past the stunning Central Station often described as one of the world’s most beautiful railway stations, as well as depot tours and the chance to see major infrastructure upgrades that were reshaping the network at the time.
